But because of the way it was positioned, it always looked like it was in quicksand. In the midst of the flowers was a small ceramic bust of Jesus. The title came about because in my mum’s backyard, there was a tree surrounded by flowers. And we knew that through our music, we now had a voice to express our emotions on how ugly and devastating the whole thing was. It was the first time we could see a war going on through adult eyes. We started writing it when the first Gulf War was going on. QUICKSAND JESUS (Slave To The Grind, 1991) Rachel can take an idea we’ve come up with, lock himself away in a room and come back with 17 pages full of great lyrics! At the time we did Youth Gone Wild, we were in in our early 20s and wanted a song that would be representative of us. He sees things from an interesting and obscure perspective. It was then that I understood he was a lot better as a lyricist than I was. But Rachel then went away and rewrote them. It originally had a different set of lyrics. Rachel took it a step further, and then we developed the song from there. The way it worked was that I had an idea for the song and where it could go.
